-Why did you choose this as your graphic design example?
This is a good typographic design of what I believe to be a magazine cover. I didn’t know what it was so I looked into it and The Tokyo Type Directors Club (Tokyo TDC) are a series of annual awards to pursue the possibilities of visual expression of letters and/or words. I didn’t know that when this image caught my eye. I honestly could hardly make out what it says. The reason I choose this design as a good example of good typographic design was because of the form. I enjoy the contrast of the rough scrambled lettering that I can hardly make out and the shape design element that is peaceful and easy on the eyes. Though I wasn’t sure what exactly what this magazine cover was all about or what they were about but I wanted to know more.
-What is the context in which the design appeared?
The design appears as a magazine cover/ collectors series.
-What is the communication objective of the design?
The communication of this design is one of Chaos and Peace simultaneously. The design looks to be made for an audience that is knowledgeable of it’s components asking to be broken down of all of it’s parts.
-How does the typography contribute to the message and purpose of the design?
The typography contributes to the chaos feeling your get when you look at it. The letters are legible but so piled onto each other with a thick dark stroke and being cut off by a shape makes it close to impossible to read. The shape element contributes to the peace. Together these two things create visual balance.
